Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy

At The Oast, we offer Shockwave Therapy as a treatment option for some persistent tendon and soft tissue problems. If you have been experiencing pain for several weeks or months and have not seen the improvement you hoped for with exercise, stretching, rest or changes to your activities, Shockwave Therapy may be appropriate.

Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment which uses controlled mechanical sound waves to stimulate a response within the tissues.

At The Oast, Shockwave Therapy is used as part of a wider treatment and rehabilitation plan. Your practitioner will assess your individual problem and discuss whether it is an appropriate treatment for you.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Despite the name, there are no electric shocks involved.

Shockwave Therapy uses a handheld device to deliver controlled mechanical pressure waves through the skin and into the area being treated. These waves provide mechanical stimulation to the tissues and may help reduce pain and encourage changes within the tissue.

Shockwave Therapy is commonly used for persistent tendon problems, particularly where symptoms have not responded as expected to more conventional treatment and rehabilitation.

What can Shockwave Therapy help with?

Depending on your individual assessment, Shockwave Therapy may be used to help with:

  • Plantar fasciopathy / plantar fasciitis and persistent heel pain
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
  • Gluteal tendinopathy and some persistent pain around the outside of the hip
  • Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder
  • Other persistent tendon and soft tissue problems where Shockwave Therapy is considered appropriate
