Back Care Awareness Week is here again, and we’re shining a spotlight on one of our most underappreciated body parts: the back.
It works tirelessly, carrying us through long days, awkward desk chairs, and the occasional attempt at DIY flat-pack furniture. Most of us know the basics for keeping it happy
*stay active,
*mind your posture,
*lift with your knees
But what about the lesser-known tips? Sometimes it is the little habits that make the biggest difference.
One underrated trick is simply to fidget.
Yes, really. Constantly shifting about in your chair may annoy your colleagues, but your back will thank you. Staying still for too long puts pressure on the same tissues and joints, while small movements keep circulation flowing and muscles awake. So, shuffle, wriggle, cross and uncross those legs – your spine will be quietly applauding.
Another gem, check your shoes.
Your feet are the unsung heroes of spinal alignment, and those worn-out soles or unsupportive slippers can set your back off balance. Investing in decent footwear may feel less glamorous than a new outfit, but your body will notice the upgrade.
Then there’s breathing.
Shallow breaths don’t let your lungs and ribs work to their full potential, which can leave your upper back and neck doing more than their fair share. By breathing deeply into your belly and chest, you give your diaphragm, ribs and spine a chance to move as they should. This fuller use of your breathing muscles can ease tension, improve stability and, as a bonus, feels a bit like hitting a reset button in the middle of your day.
Finally, give your back a little variety. Alternate between sitting, standing, stretching, and walking whenever you can. Even a short stroll to the kettle or a quick stretch between emails can break up stiffness. Think of your back like a good friend – it doesn’t want grand gestures, just a little attention here and there.
This Back Care Awareness Week, let’s celebrate our spines by trying out these less obvious strategies. They may not make headlines, but they can make daily life that bit more comfortable. After all, when your back feels good, everything else feels just that little bit easier.
