Your Back Is Not Made Of Glass (And Other Things I Wish I'd Told You Sooner)

I've spent years with my hands on people's spines, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's this: your back is not a china teacup. It doesn't need to be wrapped in bubble wrap and set gently on a high shelf, never to be touched again.

And yet, so many patients start by treating it that way, flinching at every twinge, convinced that one wrong bend will end in ruin.

Lets unravel a few myths, shall we?

Grab a cup of tea. Sit however you like, yes, even slouched.....It's ok!

Myth #1: Bad posture is destroying your spine

Here's a secret: there is no one "correct" posture. Your spine loves movement far more than it loves being frozen in a rigid, textbook-perfect line. The real enemy isn't slouching, it's staying in any position for too long. Movement is medicine. fidgeting is basically a wellness practice.

Myth #2: If it hurts, something is damaged.

Pain is a brilliant, dramatic storyteller, but it's not always giving you an accurate report. Your nervous system can amplify pain signals long after tissue has healed, like a smoke alarm that keeps shrieking after the toast is already cold. Hurt doesn't always mean harm.

Myth #3: Rest is the answer.

Bed rest for back pain is like keeping a rusty hinge perfectly still and hoping it magically un-rusts. Gentle, consistent movement is almost more healing than stillness. Your body was built to move even when, especially when, it's a little sore.

Myth #4: A "slipped disc" means your disc has slipped out of place

it hasn't gone anywhere. Discs don't slip like a bar of soap in the shower, they bulge, they change shape, but they stay put. The name is dramatic; the reality is far less alarming.

Myth #5: You'll need surgery.

The overwhelming majority of back pain resolves with time, movement, and the right guidance, no scalpel required. Surgery is a tool for a small toolbox of specific cases, not the default answer.

Did you know?

  • Your spine has roughly 220 million years of evolutionary engineering behind it, it survived dinosaurs, ice ages, and your questionable gym form.
  • 80-90% of people will experience back pain at some point in their life. you are not broken; you are wonderfully, statistically human.
  • Discs actually get their nutrients from movement - they have no direct blood supply, so bending, twisting and walking literally feed them like a slow internal watering can.
  • Stress and poor sleep can amplify back pain, as much as physical strain does. Your mind and your muscles are in constant conversation.
  • Standing desks aren't automatically "better", standing all day can be just as hard on your back as sitting all day. The magic word, again, is variety.

So here's my quirky little prescription: stop treating your spine like a liability and start treating it like the resilient, self-healing marvel it actually is. Move often. Rest sometimes. Bend, twist, dance badly in your kitchen. You back was built for life, not for a museum display case.

Trust it a little more. It's tougher and far more forgiving than the myths would have you believe.
